A. Blackboard Inc. recommends using the latest
version of Mozilla Firefox. However, Blackboard will run in Internet Explorer (version
7.0 or higher). For AOL users, there are two main caveats to be considered:
We do not recommend using the
AOL Browser to access Blackboard. You can still use Blackboard however, by
connecting through the AOL ISP, minimizing the AOL Browser, and opening a
recommended browser, such as Internet Explorer.
Additionally, if you are having any problems using a customized, or
"branded" browser, which may have been supplied by your Internet Service
Provider, please try using a "standard" browser, such as Internet Explorer
to access Blackboard, once you have connected.
For Internet Explorer, do the following:
-
Open your browser.
-
From the toolbar at the top of the screen, select TOOLS.
-
Click on INTERNET OPTIONS.
-
Select the SECURITY tab.
-
Click on the CUSTOM LEVEL button.
-
Scroll down till you find "Scripting" and ENABLE active scripting.
-
Click OK and YES to confirm the changes.
-
Click OK in the second window and refresh your current web page.
NAVIGATING THE BLACKBOARD COURSE SITE
A. To access your courses, click on the COURSES tab. This will open a page that links you to all the Blackboard courses you are enrolled in. You may need to scroll down in order to see the My Courses section.
OR
On the MY INSTITUTION page, all your courses are listed in the My Courses section. Select the appropriate course.
Note: Only financially validated students can access their current courses.
A. The Course Map enables users to browse the course:
1. Go to the navigation menu on the left.
2. Select Course Map.
A. Try the following:
-
Check your financial validation status. If you are not validated for the semester, you cannot view your courses on Blackboard.
-
If you are validated but still cannot access your course(s) on Blackboard, find out from your classmates whether they have the same problem. If they do, notify your professor, so (s)he can make the course available to the students.
-
If you still cannot view your course after it has been made available, ask your professor to add you to the course.
-
If your professor cannot add you to the course, contact Umesh Giri, your Blackboard System Administrator, at ugiri@howard.edu.
First, update your personal information, especially your e-mail address. To do this,
-
From the My Institution page, click on PERSONAL INFORMATION.
-
Click on EDIT PERSONAL INFORMATION.
-
Complete the form and click SUBMIT.
Note: Blackboard generates invalid e-mail addresses for students and faculty (e.g. youremail@howard.edu). Therefore, students must enter valid e-mail addresses in Blackboard in order to communicate with their peers and instructors.
A. Nothing. Instructors of those courses should make them unavailable to you at the end of the semester, but don't panic if you can still view courses from a previous semester on Blackboard.
A. There is an online student manual (in pdf format) in the TOOLS menu that can be reached by doing the following:
-
Within a course, click TOOLS.
-
Choose USER MANUAL from the list of tools that emerges.
-
The Blackboard Manual opens in Adobe Acrobat (this might take awhile).
-
Locate your help topic using the Table of Contents.
If you would like to download a free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, click here.
A. Do the following:
-
From the MY INSTITUTION page, go to PERSONAL INFORMATION.
-
Click on CHANGE PASSWORD.
-
Type in your new password as required (passwords are case-sensitive).
-
Click SUBMIT when you are done.
OR
Select Change Password from the Personal Information page (then follow 3-5 above).
Note: Changing your Blackboard password will not affect your Bison Web password.
A. This is the navigation trail, and it contains an ordered list of pages leading up to the current page. It should be used in lieu of the browser's BACK button to revisit previously viewed pages.
A. Your course syllabus should be on the COURSE INFORMATION OR SYLLABUS page. To access this page within a course site, follow these steps:
-
On the left panel, click the COURSE INFORMATION OR SYLLABUS button.
-
Your course syllabus should be here. Contact your professor if it isn't.
A. Do the following
-
Locate the item to be reviewed in blackboard
-
If review status is enabled by the instructor, click the MARK REVIEWED button next to the item

This means that when your professor or Blackboard administrator sends e-mail to the whole class, chances are, it will end up in the junk mail folder. Be sure to look out for such mail in your junk folder.

- 3. Click REPLY for that post.

If your internet connection is lost while taking a quiz, Blackboard will save your work as you go along. So when the connection is back up, check to see if you can still access the test and continue from where you left off. If you cannot, contact your professor immediately so that he/she can give you access to the test again. Be sure to start your tests early to allow for possible technical glitches.

A. The Blackboard Text Editor functions best in Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer: if you are using another browser, you may have to disable the Text Editor by clicking DISABLE under the Set Text Box Editor options. If you do have Internet Explorer, then you will find that with the exception of the Equation Editor, the Text Editor works just like Microsoft Word, and should thus be easy to use.
