Resources for pursuing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) have proliferated over the past decade.  Nowadays there are professional associations, bibliographies, and university websites dedicated to SOTL.  As you will see from the list below, these resources can help you understand and implement SOTL.  Some resources even include examples of other professors' SOTL research.

RESOURCES

Carnegie Academy  for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) "represents a major initiative of The Carnegie Foundation. Launched in 1998, the program builds on a conception of teaching as scholarly work."  Visit the Gallery of Teaching and Learning to access collections, exhibitions, and case studies of SOTL work.

The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (ISSOTL) "serves faculty members, staff, and students who care about teaching and learning as serious intellectual work. The goal of the Society is to foster inquiry and disseminate findings about what improves and articulates post-secondary learning and teaching."

CIRTL: Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning

Center for the Integration of Teaching, Research, and Learning  "promotes the development of a national faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching practices for diverse student audiences as part of their professional careers....STEM faculty use research methods to systematically and reflectively improve learning outcomes."

The Visible Knowledge Project "is a five-year, four million dollar project aimed at improving the quality of college and university teaching through a focus on both student learning and faculty development in technology-enhanced environments. With more than 50 faculty on 25 campuses engaged in the scholarship of teaching, the Visible Knowledge Project is among the most significant research projects in the country on technology and learning, and the largest in the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary culture fields."

University of Nebraska's Peer Review of Teaching Project "provides faculty with a structured and practical model that combines inquiry into the intellectual work of a course, careful investigation of student understanding and performance, and faculty reflection on teaching effectiveness. Begun in 1994, the PRTP has engaged hundreds of faculty members from numerous universities."

Illinois State University SOTL site "contains links to internal support for SoTL work, links to other sites about SoTL, and materials or links to examples of SoTL work."

Indiana University SOTL Program "is a faculty-driven initiative to improve undergraduate learning by fostering faculty inquiry into learning and by building interdisciplinary communities that support and refine this inquiry."
 

 

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: An Annotated Bibliography  "(1) includes significant statements about the idea of the scholarship of teaching and learning, (2) provides examples of the scholarship of teaching and learning, (3) points readers to resources that can assist them in the doing of the scholarship of teaching and learning."
