Professor Chris Hollinsed, Ph.D. is a Lecturer in General and Organic Chemistry at Howard University. Dr. Hollinsed came to Howard after a long and distinguished career in industrial chemistry at both Polaroid Corporation and DuPont. He served as a Research Group Leader at Polaroid Corporation working in Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Development and the Chemical Intermediate Supply Group. At DuPont, he worked for DuPont Polymers, as Technical and Quality Manager for the Technical Service Laboratory and in Chemical Development for the Agricultural Products Department. His work as a recruiter specializing in underrepresented minority recruitment led to the recruitment of 25% minority hires in a year when the Agricultural Products organization hired 105 technical employees. He has also worked as Director of the Petroleum Research Fund at the American Chemical Society, managing a $500 million research grants operation and a staff of 14 professionals. He has taught at several area Universities including the University of Maryland College Park and Howard University. He has participated in TAR (Teaching as Research) applying innovative teaching techniques to his current teaching with the goal of enhancing the student experience and ensuring that students understand both the content as well as their ability to comprehend and learn the material. His scientific interests are in physical organic chemistry: exploring and designing new functional materials and creating new physical forms of pharmaceuticals having enhanced absorption and bioavailability properties. A graduate of The City College of New York and the University of Wisconsin, he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was selected for this honor based on his work with his students to empower their metacognition by introducing them to the work of Dr. Saundra McGuire, "Teach Yourself How To Learn." One of his students, Ms. Kimberly Gardner was so inspired that she spawned a movement on campus, that swept us all up into it. She is a forever changed life-long learner. Dr. Hollinsed is an inspiration to us all to do more to help our students succeed, believing in their possibilities.
