Profile

Dr. DeByii L. Sababu Thomas is a dynamic educator, consultant, communicologist, and minister, who is known for her educational, inspirational, and motivational presentations on leadership and communication.

As an educator, Dr. Thomas has served on the faculty of Howard University's School of Communications for over fifteen years.  Having earned her Ph.D. at Howard, she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication & Culture, where she has earned the respect of  both students and colleagues.  Indeed, her students voted her "Teacher of the Year" three times and successfully nominated her for inclusion in the 2004 Edition of Who’s Who of  America’s Teachers.  She was also named “Coach of the Year” by the American Mock Trial Association, after leading the Howard debate team to the national championship.

As a consultant, Dr. Thomas helped launch a training initiative to improve customer service within a few departments at Howard.  The effort was a success and, eventually, gave birth to the Howard University Professional Development and Leadership Academy.  As a member of the senior faculty of the Academy, she participates in not only the training, but also the development of new courses and the evaluation of existing ones.  Included among these courses are Leadership Principles for Effective Management, Achieving Outstanding Customer Service, and Teamwork for Success.

Outside the University, Dr. Thomas is called upon constantly to share her expertise as a communicologist by facilitating workshops, developing training programs, or delivering keynote addresses.  In addition to the areas covered at Howard, she has also focused on such topics as “Leading to Learn--Learning to Lead,” “Women in Leadership,”  “Motivating and Affirming Others,” and “Intra/Interpersonal Communications in the Workplace.”   Her audiences have ranged from service workers to administrators, from welfare recipients to government officials, or from those with G.E.D.s to those with Ph.D.s.   She has also lectured at numerous colleges and universities, including Spelman, Cornell, Penn State, LaSalle, Richmond, Alaska, Syracuse, Delaware State, and Maryland.

An Ordained Elder, Dr. Thomas also educates and motivates members of the AME church, where she assists her husband in his ministry and has founded a women’s ministry called Sisters Victorious in Christ.
